The conducting program at the Elder Conservatorium of Music can be taken as either an Honours or Masters degree. The program is delivered through sessions where students conduct 2 pianos, ensemble sessions with professional players acting as the core group, the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, and finally, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra itself. These sessions are supplemented with one to one lessons and group discussion and video analysis sessions. Students also have the opportunity to assist on specific projects with the ASO, giving them a window into what the profession actually entails in real life. Whilst some students are based in Adelaide, the program is delivered in intensive sessions over the course of the year, thus allowing for students to remain based in their home state.
